Guided Cave Experiences

Discover the Hidden World Beneath Appalachia

West Virginia is home to some of the most remarkable cave systems in North America. Beneath the mountains lie underground rivers, towering passages, intricate formations, and ecosystems that have remained hidden for thousands of years.

Karstlands and Wildwater Institute offers guided wild cave experiences designed to introduce participants to these extraordinary places in a safe, educational, and memorable way. Whether you are stepping into a cave for the first time or are an experienced outdoor adventurer seeking a new challenge, our trips combine exploration, natural history, and hands-on learning.

Unlike commercial show caves, these are real caves. There are no lights, paved walkways, or handrails. Participants travel through the underground environment using helmets and headlamps while learning about cave geology, hydrology, biology, conservation, and the history of exploration in Appalachia.

What to Expect

Every trip is tailored to the interests, experience level, and goals of the group. Along the way, participants may encounter underground streams, large chambers, delicate cave formations, fossils, rare cave-adapted wildlife, and evidence of the powerful natural forces that shaped the Appalachian Mountains.

Topics often include:

  • Cave geology and formation

  • Underground rivers and groundwater systems

  • Cave biology and unique cave wildlife

  • Appalachian natural history

  • Cave conservation and stewardship

  • Cave mapping and exploration

  • The science of cave air and underground environments

Safety First

Your safety is our highest priority. All participants receive a thorough introduction to cave travel techniques and cave conservation before entering the cave. Appropriate safety equipment is provided, and trips are led by an experienced guide with extensive training in cave rescue, wilderness medicine, and outdoor education.

Who Can Participate?

We offer a variety of experiences ranging from introductory cave trips for curious beginners to more physically demanding adventures for experienced participants. Private trips, educational groups, homeschool groups, scout groups, and custom programs are available.

If you are unsure which trip is right for you, we are happy to help you select an experience that matches your interests and comfort level.

More Than a Cave Tour

At Karstlands, we believe caves are more than destinations—they are opportunities for discovery. Every trip supports our broader mission of education, conservation, and scientific research through the CANDLE Program, helping us better understand and protect the underground landscapes of Appalachia.

We invite you to join us beneath the mountains and experience a world that few people ever have the opportunity to see.

Donation-Based Adventures

Karstlands and Wildwater Institute operates many of its guided cave experiences on a donation basis. Rather than focusing solely on commercial tourism, our goal is to make cave exploration, education, and scientific discovery accessible while supporting ongoing research and conservation efforts.

Donations from guided trips directly support the CANDLE Program (Cave Atmosphere Network for Detection, Learning, and Exploration), helping fund cave-air monitoring equipment, scientific research, educational programming, cave conservation initiatives, and exploration projects throughout Appalachia.

When you join a trip, you are doing more than exploring a cave—you are helping support efforts to better understand and protect the underground wilderness of West Virginia.

Suggested donation amounts vary depending on the trip and group size. Please contact us for details about upcoming opportunities and custom experiences.
