About the Karstlands and Wildwater Institute

The Karstlands and Wildwater Institute is a West Virginia-based organization dedicated to cave exploration, education, conservation, and scientific discovery. Founded by cave explorer and educator Kyle Mills, the Institute exists to help people experience and better understand the remarkable underground landscapes of Appalachia.

Our mission is simple: to connect people with the hidden world beneath their feet.

The Appalachian Mountains contain some of the most extensive and fascinating cave systems in North America. These underground environments serve as natural laboratories where geology, hydrology, biology, climatology, and exploration intersect. Through guided cave experiences, citizen-science initiatives, educational programs, and research projects, the Institute seeks to foster a deeper appreciation for these extraordinary places while promoting their long-term conservation.

At Karstlands, we believe that exploration and education go hand in hand. Whether someone is entering a cave for the first time, assisting with a cave survey, participating in a groundwater dye trace, helping deploy environmental monitoring equipment, or learning about cave conservation, every experience is an opportunity for discovery.

The Institute's work is centered around three core areas:

Exploration

We provide opportunities for people to safely experience wild caves and participate in the ongoing tradition of cave exploration. From introductory cave trips to advanced exploration projects, we strive to make the underground world accessible while maintaining the highest standards of safety and stewardship.

Education

Learning is at the heart of everything we do. Through field-based experiences, public presentations, educational programs, and citizen-science opportunities, we help participants understand the geology, ecology, hydrology, and natural history of cave systems and the Appalachian landscape.

Science and Conservation

The Institute actively supports scientific research and conservation initiatives designed to improve our understanding of cave environments. Through projects such as the CANDLE Program (Cave Atmosphere Network for Detection, Learning, and Exploration), cave survey efforts, groundwater tracing studies, and radiolocation projects, we work to expand knowledge while helping protect these fragile resources for future generations.

We believe that some of the most exciting discoveries remaining in the eastern United States are hidden underground. By bringing together exploration, science, and education, the Karstlands and Wildwater Institute seeks to inspire curiosity, encourage stewardship, and contribute to a growing understanding of Appalachia's hidden wilderness.

Whether you join us on a cave trip, participate in a citizen-science project, support research efforts, or simply share our fascination with the underground world, we invite you to become part of the adventure.
