Wilderness First Aid + Self-Rescue Courses

Our wilderness first aid and self-rescue courses are for anyone who spends time in places where twisted ankles, falling rocks, and questionable decisions are just part of the plan. You’ll learn how to splint a leg with what's in your pack, rig a haul system with ropes and grit, and handle emergencies when calling 911 isn’t an option. It’s hands-on, muddy, occasionally chaotic—and you’ll leave sore, smarter, and a lot more capable when things go sideways in the wild.

Options

All of our wilderness first aid and self-rescue courses are fully customizable to your group's needs, schedule, and terrain. Want to focus on caving scenarios? We’ll get underground. River rescues more your thing? We’ll paddle and flip until it makes sense. These hybrid courses are offered in partnership with Survival Med, blending flexible online content with in-person, hands-on instruction that we tailor to your environment and skill level. You pick the dates, the focus, and how gritty you want to get—we’ll take it from there.

Hybrid Course Structure

Our courses are built on Survival Med’s hybrid model, which means you’ll complete the classroom content online—at your own pace, in your own time—before we meet in the field for two days of hands-on, scenario-based training. The online portion is engaging, practical, and zero fluff (no boring PowerPoint lectures here), so you can focus on real-world skills when we’re face-to-face. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a working guide, this format lets you get certified without giving up a whole week of your life—or your sanity.

Senerio Based Training

The in-person portion of the course is where things get real. Over two full days, you’ll run through realistic wilderness emergency scenarios—splinting broken limbs with sticks and foam pads, building improvised litters, managing high-angle evacuations, and making tough decisions under pressure. We’ll be outside, moving, solving problems, and probably yelling “Are you okay?!” at our friends in the dirt. It’s messy, immersive, and way more fun (and useful) than sitting in a classroom. You’ll leave tired, confident, and ready to take the lead when things go amok in the backcountry.

Customizable

This course isn’t one-size-fits-all—we tailor it to match your outdoor life. Whether you’re a caver, climber, paddler, backpacker, or all of the above, we’ll design scenarios that reflect the real risks you might face in the field. Expect cave rescues in actual caves, river evacuations with soaked gear, or vertical scenarios with ropes and gear anchors. From group dynamics to gear-specific challenges, we shape the training around your goals, environment, and experience level—because the skills stick better when they actually make sense for what you do.
